directed by Gore Verbinski. Written by John Logan. Running time: 107 minutes. Rated PG
The team that bought you "Pirates of the Carrabiean" comes an animated, animalized Western. "Rango" is unlike any other big studio animated film I've ever seen. In terms of pure animation it's flawless. The creatures have even more realism than The owls from "legend of the guardians" and that's saying a lot, then again ILM was responsible for bringing it to life, no wonder its jaw-dropping. There are no cute cuddly characters here. Since the film takes place in the Mojave desert, much of the characters are reptiles and rodents with the occasional birds and bats. Johnny Depp is fantastic as the voice of our pint size scaly hero, Rango. Like his live action characters he completely disappears into his animated counterpart. The story is good but at times feels disjointed and even lagging, It bounces around too much. Other times your waiting for the story to move forward. Yes it plays like a true western and even pays homage to a few classics. The visuals are spectacular but it takes forever to get to the resolution. Kids under 3 might find some of the images frightening and parents might even find a few things inappropriate. However, I do love that fact that its not in 3D. Please stop the 3D madness, just bring it out once in a while. You won't miss the 3D here. "Rango" plays like a real movie and is unapologetic for its humor and satire, I can appreciate that. There is also a cool surprise waiting for those who sit and wait patiently and has a very unexpected Eco message. This film is enjoyable an I recommend it but its definitely not a Pixar type of film. Those who have that in mind are in for quite a surprise.
