The man behind 300 brings us his latest epic, “Sucker Punch” A tale about a girl named Baby Doll, an orphan who is wrongly convicted and sent to an Asylum. Her only way to freedom is breaking the barriers of her mind. She may be imprisoned but there is nothing she cannot dream of in her imagination. They Asylum is run by the ward keeper Blue Jones played with intensity and gusto by Oscar Issac. Baby Doll also befriends 4 other girls, Amber, sisters Sweet Pea and Rocket and Blondie. I know it sounds like a punk girl band, well it kinda is. Carla Gugino rounds out the cast as Dr. Vera Gorski. The Institution is set up in a way where the patients are allowed to put on acts under the care of Dr. Gorski. It’s hard to explain but the entire film takes place in a single moment. Snyder doesn’t disappoint with his stylized, slow-mo, rock- em sock -em action, that he has perfected. It’s a little bit of Black Swan, Lord of the Rings, I-robot, Ninja Assassin and the Xbox game BioShock all rolled in to one. The visuals are stunning but it’s so noisy that its almost too much at times and becomes overwhelming. The story has many layers yet simple to understand, but the narrative becomes a bit repetitive after the girls know what their mission is. I wish more time was spent on fleshing out the story than the CGI. The performances are good all around but Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Oscar Issac stand out. The film’s title says it all, if you’re expecting anything else, you might be disappointed. I cannot recommend this to everyone. If you’re a fan of Snyder’s visual style, and you’re a video game action freak, you might enjoy this, but it might be too much for the casual movie go-er. If you want to see a more mainstream, thought provoking action film, check out “Limitless”
