Can two friends ever remain just friends while using each other for sex? This is the question our two protagonists ask in this lame rom com appropriately titled “No Strings Attached”. Emma and Adam are two childhood friends who run into each other throughout their life but never had a chance to hook up, even though Adam suggests he might be interested in her. After Adam finds out that his dad (played by none other than Kevin Kline) has been sleeping with his ex, he decided to go out and find some meaningless sex to feel better. He ends up waking up at Emma’s house where her roomies who are all doctors, try to pull a prank on him. This is probably the funniest scene in the film. Okay fine, it’s not all lame, there are a few funny parts but this film is just not that good. It’s predictable and the writing and performances are trite. Sure Portman is great and it’s nice to see this funny, sexy side of her but Kutcher brings nothing new to the table. There are some good supporting characters but the film is not good enough for me to recommend. Even under Ivan Reitman’s direction, there is nothing memorable about this film. I can’t image why Portman produced and starred in it. I guess doing these kinds of films affords her to do more independent cinema like “Black Swan”. The premise is great, but I think they missed their mark, it could’ve been better. There is another film called “Friends with Benefits” starring Natalie Portman’s other half Mila Kunis and Andy Samberg coming out later this year. Hopefully they’ll get it right. Its award season, and there are so many good films out right now, go see them, skip this one!
