Rabbit Hole

****  4 out of 5

directed by John Cameron Mitchell. Written by David Lindsay-Abaire, based on his play. Running time: 91 minutes. Rated PG-13 (for for mature thematic material, some drug use and language).

Based on an acclaimed play by David Lindsay-Abaire, “Rabbit Hole” is one of the most sad and depressing movies of 2010, but it is also a brilliantly written and directed film with some amazing performance by the entire cast led by Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart.   Becca and Howie (Kidman and Eckhart) are an upper middle class couple living in upstate NY. At first everything seems normal but we quickly realize there is an underlying tension in their home. Every room echoes with the sight and sound of their only son who only months ago died tragically in a car accident. This is never shown, but much of the film delves deep into the emotional aftermath of their healing. Both deal with it differently. Becca wants to get rid of everything that reminds her of her son and Howie holds on to every last bit. They both attend group therapy sessions but Becca grows tired of all the “God talk” and decides to skip it. Months pass and both grow apart as they try to figure out a way to move past their grief. Becca finds some solace in meeting the teenage boy who was behind the wheel of the car that killed her son. They meet several times and these scenes are filled with some wonderful  performances by Kidman and new comer Miles Teller. I found these scenes to be the most effective. There are many more layers to this film and I think it takes a very realistic approach on the subject matter. One thing I loved is that it also asks the question of God and Science, very briefly but it becomes an integral part of the story. I think you will see several Oscar nods for this film for the cast and crew. You also are probably wondering what the title is all about, it does have a meaning and I won’t spoil that for you, it is an interesting surprise. By the time the film is over, everything that you have been watching comes to a full circle, well almost. This is an amazing film and I recommend it to any fans that love dramatic pieces. Although, for those with kids or who have recently lost someone, it can be hard to watch.  So go at your own discretion.
