Bridesmaids

   *** 1/2     3.5 out of  5

directed by Paul Feig. Written by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig. Running time: 128 minutes. Rated R

Those who are expecting to see the female version of the “The Hangover” will surely be disappointed. The film is nothing like it, nor does it try to be. It’s about two best friends, and what happens when one of them gets engaged while the other’s romantic life is spiraling downwards. I found the first 30 minutes quite boring, as it took some time for the film to find its feet and move forward. This film is full of quirky characters and the least quirky is Kristin Wiig, which is quite an accomplishment. Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly) is the one that steals the show as Megan…Lillian’s future sister-in-law. This film has some good laughs but it’s definitely not a non-stop riot like “The Hangover”.  Kristin Wiig’s performance, and her chemistry with her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is what gives the film some heart, and makes it worth watching. Wiig is great at portraying off-beat flawed characters and she delivers again. “Bridesmaids” is not the funniest film I’ve seen but it’s got enough laughs for me to recommend it. Go see it!
