“On Stranger Tides” indeed, the new “Pirates” film breaks away from the old and returns with a fresh start. Many of the major characters are missing, and a few old ones are back. It’s a fact, that none of these films are anything without Johnny Depp’s “Captian Jack Sparrow,” and he is better than ever. Director Rob Marshall takes the film in a new direction with the introduction of a love interest for Sparrow…the beautiful and feisty Angelica (Penelope Cruz). The opening is fun as King George’s soldiers chase Sparrow, as he carriage hops around London and finally gets saved by an old familiar face. The plot gets interesting as the race begins for the “fountain of youth”. The great nemesis this time around is “Blackbeard.” He can control everything on his ship with a wave of his hand and has zombies as his crew. Really? Zombies? It’s also surprising when we find out what happened to “The Black Pearl…” cool but a bit cheesy. The other films had skeletons, the kraken, Kiera Knightly, and Orlando Bloom. This one has none of them, but it does have beautiful, yet deadly mermaids. “On Stranger Tides” seems like it should be a good movie, and parts of it is fun to watch, but I couldn’t help thinking that “they should’ve just released it on DVD.” The best parts of this film are the beginning and ending, and the fact that it’s about 30 minutes shorter than the last one, is definitely a plus. I don’t think you’ll be missing much if you don’t see it. Its a Maybe!
